Wednesday 8 February

  1. Wednesday locally strong wind gusts 27-33 m/s are expected from southwest, and storm 10, risk of violent storm 11, on the coast. The wind will increase first in the Lofoten area.

    Area

Applies to Most parts of Northern-Norway.

    [met.no]

    Instructions

Secure loose objects. Avoid unnecessary journeys to exposed places. Follow advice and check status from transport operators. Check road reports (175.no). Be careful in coastal areas. In advance consider measures to limit damage.

    Consequences

Loose items may be taken by the wind. Possibly cancelled departures for ferry, plane, or other transport. Bridges may be closed. Some journeys may have longer travel times. The power supply may be impacted, due to tree(s) falling over. Some roads may be closed due to trees or other objects in the road. High waves may cause damage to infrastructure and buildings in the coastal zone. The strong wind may cause locally high waves in fjords and lakes.

    Timeline

    1. Wednesday, 8 February 03:00 - wind increased
    2. Thursday, 9 February 01:00 - wind wanes

    The three severity levels

    Yellow - moderate danger
    Orange - considerable danger
    Red - extreme danger

Read more about the severity levels at hjelp.yr.no

  2. Risk of slush flows is especially high in areas with more than 30 cm of snow. The snow may in some places be fully water-saturated. Slush flows are triggered even in relatively gentle slopes, where water accumulates. Slush flows follow terrain depressions and may develop into debris flows. Details are found in the warning message in Norwegian. Heavy rain is expected. Strong winds may enhance snowmelting.

    Area

Applies to Nordland nord for Saltfjellet og ytre deler av Sør-Troms.

    [varsom.no]

    Instructions

Keep yourself updated about the development of the weather, the landslide and flood situation, and follow the weather radar.

    Consequences

Slush flows may be expected. Exposed railways and roads may be closed. Slush and debris flows may reach the valley bottom even if they are triggered high in the terrain.

    The three severity levels

    Yellow - moderate danger
    Orange - considerable danger
    Red - extreme danger

Read more about the severity levels at hjelp.yr.no

  3. On Wednesday we expect considerable avalanche danger for region Ofoten. Avalanche problem is persistent weak layer (slab avalanches) and wet snow (loose snow avalanches).

    Area

    Applies to Ofoten.

    [varsom.no]

    Instructions

Travelling in avalanche terrain requires advanced knowledge, experience in route finding and ability to identify the avalanche problem. Generally, it is recommended to avoid avalanche terrain. Avalanches may hit some avalanche-exposed roads and occasionally settlements.

    Danger levels

Green: danger level 1 - low avalanche danger (not shown on Yr)
Yellow: danger level 2 - moderate avalanche danger (not shown on Yr)
Orange: danger level 3 - considerable avalanche danger
Red: danger level 4 - high avalanche danger
Red: danger level 5 - very high avalanche danger
