The three severity levels
Orange - considerable dangerRead more about the severity levels at hjelp.yr.no
Water discharge is expected to increase because of rain and snowmelt. This may cause local inundation where river channels are filled with ice and because of frozen ground. It also may cause ice drift in streams, with subsequent local inundation. Local flooding and erosion damage.
Area
Applies to Lofoten, Vesterålen og sør Troms.
Instructions
Stay informed on the situation. Cleaning of drainage paths and culverts is recommended. Keep away from rivers and streams with high flow.
Consequences
Local flooding and/or erosional damage in streams and small rivers. Stormwater in urban areas.
Risk of slush flows is especially high in areas with more than 30 cm of snow. The snow may in some places be fully water-saturated. Slush flows are triggered even in relatively gentle slopes, where water accumulates. Slush flows follow terrain depressions and may develop into debris flows. Details are found in the warning message in Norwegian. Heavy rain is expected. Strong winds may enhance snowmelting.
Area
Applies to Nordland nord for Saltfjellet og ytre deler av Sør-Troms.
Instructions
Keep yourself updated about the development of the weather, the landslide and flood situation, and follow the weather radar.
Consequences
Slush flows may be expected. Exposed railways and roads may be closed. Slush and debris flows may reach the valley bottom even if they are triggered high in the terrain.
From Wednesday afternoon very heavy rain is expected, 40-60 mm in 12 hours and 60-80 mm in 24 hours. The precipitation decreases early Thursday morning.
Area
Applies to Lofoten, parts of Vesteraalen and South-Troms.
Instructions
Consider the need for preventive measures. Follow the advice of emergency authorities, both local and governmental. The need for emergency preparedness shall be assessed continuously by emergency response actors. Consider whether the journey is necessary. Check road reports (175.no). Adjust the speed and use caution while driving.
Consequences
Risk of flooding of low-lying densely populated areas. Check varsom.no for more information. Locally difficult driving conditions, especially at waterways. Roads may be closed. Road conditions affected with road spray and hydroplaning in some places.
Timeline
- Wednesday, 8 February 13:00 - increasing danger
- Thursday, 9 February 02:00 - danger is over
